SCOTUS rejects GM's ignition switch appeal

The Supreme Court recently rejected General Motors Co.'s appeal seeking to block some lawsuits related to defective ignition switches in its vehicles. The justices upheld a federal appeals court ruling from last year that the company's 2009 bankruptcy does not shield it from liability for injuries and deaths that occurred pre-bankruptcy because GM knew about the problem and kept it secret from the public for over a decade.

There have also been reports of injuries caused by a rebounding door striking a person after they attempted to close it. Since last fall NHTSA has received hundreds of additional complaints related to these problems. The agency announced yesterday that it will upgrade its investigation to an "Engineering Analysis" and expanded its scope to include 2013 Ford Fusion and 2013 Lincoln MKZ vehicles.

NHTSA is currently investigating exploding Takata airbags that have injured and killed numerous people over the past several years. Many of the known injuries and deaths involve Honda (and Acura) vehicles, several of which were 2001 and 2002 model year vehicles. Honda Civic and Honda Accord are two of the most frequently involved vehicles thus far.
