Jury awards family $5 million in hospital negligence case

Illinois patients often rely on doctors to correctly interpret images such as X-rays, MRIs and CAT scans. Most of the time that might be true, but they are human, which means that mistakes can happen. In some cases, those errors cost a patient his or her life. This type of hospital negligence is what led an out-of-state jury to award a family nearly $5 million after the death of an 88-year-old man.

Does the review of hospital negligence cases protect patients?

It might surprise Illinois readers that here in the United States, the third most common cause of death is medical mistakes. In fact, in 2013, nearly 251,000 people died from errors caused by medical professionals. Some are looking at hospital negligence claims to determine those actions that seem to cause the most errors overall and/or in a particular hospital in the hopes of making the changes necessary to eliminate -- or at least reduce -- the number of errors.

Hospital errors cause nearly 10 percent of U.S. deaths

When many Illinois residents think about the leading causes of death in the United States, they most likely think of accidents, cancer, heart disease and other illnesses. It might surprise many people to know that nearly 10 percent of the deaths in the United States are actually caused by doctor, surgical and other hospital errors. That percentage makes it the third leading cause of death in this country.

Jury says woman was permanently injured by hospital negligence

Patients here in Illinois and around the country routinely put their lives into the hands of strangers when they are at their most vulnerable. When an illness strikes or an injury occurs, many people rush to a hospital looking for someone to take the time to care about their predicament and do what it takes to ensure they leave the hospital better than when they arrived. However, when the trust given to medical professionals is betrayed and someone is injured by hospital negligence, his or her life can be changed forever.
